Op 20 Augustus 1972 organiseerde het platenlabel Stax Records een benefietconcert ter herdenking aan de 7e verjaardag van de Watts rellen in 1965. Tijdens deze rellen in de wijk Watts in Los Angeles vielen 34 doden en raakten meer dan 1.000 mensen gewond. Aanleiding van deze rellen was discriminatie van Afro-Amerikanen en Hispanics in deze wijk. Het complete concert beslaat alle opnames, zowel de concerten als de speeches, in het L.A. Memorial Coliseum verdeeld over 6 CD's inclusief een 80 pagina's tellend hardcover boek.
